On Saturday afternoon (the FrenchToGo weekend starts at 2pm on Friday), we had a trip out to the beautiful gardens, vineyard and building of the Château de Flaugergues, to the east of Montpellier. Here, we really got involved in and learnt a lot about both the history and the current lifestyle and culture of wine production with our FrenchToGo teacher. At the Château de Flaugergues, Henri and Bridgette de Colbert let you explore their stunning 17th century house and grounds at your leisure, but our visit was focused on wine.

First, we all had a very enjoyable stroll around the 5 hectares of Château gardens with our French teacher in the warm Mediterranean sun. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition between all parts of the grounds from the French style garden, to the English style park, as well as the olive groves – they all had a different atmosphere and layout so to best present their large variety of plants from all over the world. Sitting down in different parts of the garden, park and olive grove, it was as if they were all trying to tell you their stories and secrets. Here and there whilst wandering around the grounds, we glimpsed the vast vineyard beyond. Finally, after each glimpse becoming more and more tantalizing, we were taken to the vineyards!

Here, we enjoyed learning about the history of the wine production at Château de Flaugergues whlist walking up and down the vast and succulent vines. Wine production it is a family tradition at Château de Flaugergues that dates back to 1696, and for the last 10 years, Pierre de Colbert has been in charge of wine production. The vineyards cover 27 hectares and in 2016, a new vinification cellar was installed (we only caught a glimpse of that as it is still brand new and highly prized by the family).

After this delightful and informative tour of the vineyards, we were taken to a beautiful room with an arched ceiling for the grand wine tasting. We heard all about the bottling and aging process and eventually got to try our hand at slowly smelling the wine and taking aerated sips so it savour the wine’s flavor, much to the delight and sometimes amusement of our guide.

I could go on, but I’m sure this is enough to capture your imagination as to how beneficial and enjoyable alpha.b’s FrenchToGo language weekends are- go on one!
